Hamilton City

Hamilton is New Zealand’s largest inland city, set along the banks of the mighty Waikato River. The city grew from an abandoned Māori settlement later occupied by the Waikato Militia. For centuries, the river has served as a vital trade route, and today, it continues to provide both power and water to the region. One of Hamilton’s most celebrated attractions is the Hamilton Gardens, a spectacular 58-hectare sanctuary featuring themed collections and beautifully curated displays, offering a peaceful retreat for both residents and visitors. The Waikato Museum of Art and History showcases a rich array of Māori wood carvings, many of which were recovered from the surrounding swamps and waterways. Visitors can also enjoy a trip on the MV Waipa Delta, a 1877 paddle vessel that cruises the Waikato River from Memorial Park, offering scenic views of classic bridges and picturesque, tree-lined riverbanks. The city centre features a wide range of cafés, restaurants, and shops, making it a vibrant and welcoming place to explore.
