Mt Ruapehu is the only ski field in the North Island of New Zealand, it also provides the unique experience of skiing on an active volcano and within a World Heritage Area. There are two ski areas, Whakapapa, which covers 1050 hectares with more than 65 trails of varied levels, while Turoa has Australasia’s longest vertical descent and New Zealand’s highest lift. Both ski areas are approximately 25% beginner, 50% intermediate and 25% advanced with a total of 52 groomed trails across both mountains. Both mountains have terrain parks to hone your tricks and are a short drive from the alpine villages of Ohakune and Whakapapa village. The roads to the mountains can be easily driven in your rental car, and from the lower carpark you can take advantage of the free shuttles to the ski areas. Turoa’s kids centre is a licensed childcare facility for 2-5yrs, with the option of including beginner ski lessons for the youngsters. Whatever your experience there are snow school lessons available to take you the next level and beginners packages which include everything for a great first day on the snow. The latest gear can be hired on the mountain, perfect for visitors travelling light and when you need a break there are a variety of on mountain cafes and bars to refuel at.
