The Far North is a tranquil region known for its golden sand beaches, abundant wildlife, and lush forests. Cape Reinga, the most famous spot, is where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea meet, creating dramatic tidal surges. The Cape’s lighthouse, built in 1941, replaced the original from 1879 and was automated in 1987. In Māori mythology, Cape Reinga, or Te Rerenga Wairua, is the "leaping off place of spirits" as they journey to their ancestral homeland. Nearby, Tapotupoto Bay and Spirits Bay offer stunning beaches. Ninety Mile Beach, though actually 60 miles long, is a popular 4WD destination. A visit to Doubtless Bay, named by Captain Cook, and Mangonui, a former whaling hub, adds historical charm to the journey. A Dune Rider day tour is recommended for exploring Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach.
